If any of you have seen the 2004 movie “DiG” then you already know that Brian Jonestown Massacre‘s front man Anton Newcombe is a musical genius. He seems to live his life like a hippie in terms of views on capitalism, yet has no problem punching his best friend in the face, he works harder than anyone to make the band successful, sometimes recording entire albums almost by himself, but then will self destruct if fame and fortune seems to be getting too close. The movie DiG follows the Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols over 7 years documenting first and foremost the struggles Anton Newcombe goes through trying to keep, in his mind, his artistic integrity, while trying to make money to do what he loves, yet avoiding fame and fortune. This leads to many problems within the band, amongst his friends and those closest to him including front man of The Dandy Warhols Courtney Taylor who narrates the movie. From this movie you see that the members of Brian Jonestown Massacre, do believe in Anton’s genius, but get frustrated as they are often perceived as an easily replaceable cog in the wheel. You also see that Brian Jonestown Massacre, eats, sleeps, breaths, and bleeds rock and roll. From the drugs and fighting, to doing shows for 10 people to hundreds, partying with the best of them, and seeming quite content to be struggling musicians for the rest of their lives. On Antons website he denounces the film as reducing several years of hard work to “at best a series of punch-ups and mishaps taken out of context, and at worst bold faced lies and misrepresentation of fact.” But, as you see quite clearly in the film, Anton often denounces anything that brings his creation closer to the mainstream media. Either way its a great look at the very private Brian Jonestown Massacre, a band that has been compared to Jefferson Airplane, to The Velvet Underground, to The Rolling Stones for their “psychedelic rock”, creating sounds with anything they can get their hands on. This is a must not miss show. Bring your rock and roll attitude, your going to need it.
